How to wash your wig (and get the style back)

Washing your wig is really very easy! Follow these easy steps to have your beautiful wigs looking just like new! Wigs are different from your own hair, so it does require special steps to keep your locks looking beautiful. Never use regular shampoo, as it will weigh down the fiber, unless it is a human hair wig.

Brush your wig using a wig brush before washing it, and make sure to get out all of the tangles.

Lay your wig on a flat surface. When brushing your wig, start by brushing the ends of the wig. Use a gentle pressure; if you pull too hard, the wig will shed more hair than necessary. When your ends are tangle-free, start brushing slightly from the middle of the wig, down towards the ends. When that section is tangle free, then start from the top of the cap of the wig. Brush slowly and gently. Working from the ends and towards the crown of the wig also help to protect the fibers and will keep your wig from shedding.

Fill a large bucket, sink or bathtub with cool or lukewarm water, and gently rinse your wig. If possible, swish your wig in a figure 8 pattern.

Add a dash of your favorite wig shampoo or baby shampoo to the water. Swish your wig through the water, washing gently. Let your wig sit in the water for three to five minutes, and then swish it gently through again.

Rinse your wig thoroughly using cool water to remove all shampoo. Lightly squeeze the hair to help get the water out. Make sure to not rub the hair; friction when the hair is wet can damage the fibers.

Gently towel blot the wig, being careful not to rub. Lay it flat or on a moulded head to air dry thoroughly at room temperature. Make sure to NOT wring or towel dry the wig.

Never brush or comb your wig when it is wet. Doing this can can damage the fiber, preventing your style from returning to its original style.

After your wig is completely dry, you can use a revitalizing mist or spray to condition your wig and add shine and bounce. You may also brush or style your wig at this point.
