Self-adhering vs. attachable breast forms

Wearing breast forms is so much fun, and it makes you feel so feminine. Wearing breast forms with a pocket bra is a great way to have security, but sometimes it’s nice to really feel the breast forms be a part of your body. That’s where attaching comes in.

To attach or not attach

Do you need to attach your breast forms? Absolutely not! Most breast forms are designed with bras in mind, since they’re meant to give you a female shape under your clothing. A good bra will keep them where they need to be while giving you the shape of breasts.

Sometimes, it’s nice to feel the breast forms be more a part of you rather than being supported by your bra. That’s when attaching breast forms becomes important to anyone who wears breast forms: cross dressers, trans women, drag queens and post-mastectomy women to name a few. There’s a few reasons this may be the case: maybe you have a really cute dress that is a bit lower cut than your favorite bra, or maybe you just want to try something new.

When it comes to attaching breast forms, always check the product information and warranty. Some breast forms are designed to go braless, while others might end up with a voided warranty if they’re glued on. For your own piece of mind, double-check and make sure that you are using the recommended attaching method for your breast forms!

How to attach breast forms

Attaching breast forms will vary depending on the style of breast form it is. Some use double-sided tapes to give you a waterproof, sweatproof hold. Others may use spray adhesives, and others still might be naturally sticky. We’re going to talk about this style of breast forms, which we at The Breast Form Store call “self-adhering” breast forms.

Self-adhering breast forms are different from attachable breast forms. Not all breast forms that can be attached to your body are self-adhering, and not all breast forms that are self-adhering are attachable! Confusing, right? Here’s how it works out:

Self-adhering breast formsAttachable breast forms
Built-in glue ✓ YES!NO, extra glue must be used
Can be worn braless?NO, unless specifically noted✓ YES! With the right glue
Can be worn with pocket brasNO, they stick to the fabric✓ YES!

Why is this the case? Simply put, not all built-in glues are strong enough!

Some self-adhering breast forms are designed just to hold the breast form in place against the chest while still being worn with your favorite bra, or maybe the type of glue that is built in to the breast form just isn’t strong enough. This can be especially true if the breast forms are really heavy.

How do I choose the right type of breast forms?

There’s an easy way to help you to decide what type of breast forms are the best for you. Do you want to go braless, or do you want to always wear your breast forms with a bra?

If you always want to wear a bra, you can go with attachable breast forms OR self-adhering breast forms. Odds are, you’ll probably be happier with something self-adhering like AMOLUX Diamond Deluxe breast forms. These have a built-in adhesive, but aren’t meant to go braless. That means it’ll feel like it’s a part of your body, but you’ll still need your favorite lingerie to keep your breast forms in place.

If you want to go braless, then you need to make sure that the breast forms are designed specifically for going braless! Self-adhering breast forms that can also be worn braless may need an extra glue to keep them in place, so keep that in mind. The most popular self-adhering breast forms are Divine Collection Aphrodite breast forms.

However, you don’t have to go with something that is self-adhering. Gold Seal breast forms are a great example of breast forms that are designed to let you go braless with double-sided tapes, but can still be worn with your favorite bras (including pocket bras). They’re also more affordable than self-adhering breast forms, because they are easier to manufacturer. Score!

Do you prefer attachable breast forms or self-adhering breast forms and why?

  1. I prefer Attachable as I feel more secure with them. Sometimes the self adhering will shift in the bra, especially if they are large.

  2. Self-adhering when I have time to go braless for long periods, attachable when time is short. I have both Aphrodite (medium and XLarge and Hera (size 6) forms now, and love wearing for long periods. But frankly it’s something of a stretch to call them “self-adhering” Sure, right out of the box they don’t really need any adhesive help, well the Xlarge does, but for adhesion that really lasts, I use the Factor 2 brush on med adhesive sold here. I refuse to use Hollister: it’s messy and impossible to use for touchups, which I always need. Skin-Tac before form application is very helpful too. The most common problem I have is that these forms, even with good adhesive, tend to pop open at the cleavage when sitting. The factor 11 saves the day with a quick touch-up to any open area and no more gapping.

    1. I to have both Aphrodite and Hera forms, medium and size 8 respectively. I bought the Hollister adhesive and yeah it is junk…Haven’t tried the Factor 2 but did find that you Skin-Tac. Nicer than the wipes as you don’t have to wear gloves to apply, and it holds pretty well if applied to the form as well as the chest.
