Understanding Intersex
Intersex is a natural variation in human biology. Some people are born with traits—chromosomes, genitalia, or reproductive anatomy—that don’t fit typical notions of “male” or “female.” Intersex individuals may identify as male, female, both, or neither, and their gender identity is separate from their intersex status.
Estimates suggest about 1 in 2,000 to 1 in 4,500 births are intersex. This diversity is normal, not a disorder, and recognizing it helps create a more inclusive, understanding world.

International Intersex Day started with the first International Intersex Forum in 2011 and has grown into a global moment of visibility and solidarity. It’s a day to:
