Every transformation begins with the right details — and few details make as much of an impact as the perfect wig. The right style, color, and fit can frame your face, express your femininity, and make every look feel complete. But with so many options available, knowing how to choose the wig that truly suits you can feel overwhelming.
That’s exactly what we’re exploring in this week’s edition of The Powder Room, where one reader asked:
“Good evening, how do I choose the wig that suits me?”

Good evening to you! When it comes to wigs, the options are limitless! Budget is important, also how often you see yourself using the wig (everyday, once a year), and the question of colour/ length? If its a first wig, best bet is to go to something close to your natural hair colour, unless you want a drastic change! In terms of length, look at your face shape (heart, oval) as that can add or subtract to your looks. If you only want to wear it indoors infrequently, you can probs go for a cheaper wig that won't last very long, but does the job and has artificial fibres. If you want something more long wearing (literally in this case) you can go for wigs with different caps (lace front, monofillament) and artificial fibres, maybe even human hair. Maintenence is important too, short wigs are easier to keep than long, and artificial fibres easier than human hair. But if you want to put the time into a long human hair wig, the rewards are so worth it❤!

There are a couple of things you can look for when choosing a wig. The first is figuring out your face shape. Certain styles flatter certain shapes, so knowing yours makes the process much easier.
For example, if you have a longer face, it helps to go for styles that make your face appear rounder. Lots of volume, a deep side part, or straight bangs can balance things out. Straight hair tends to lengthen and slim the face, while waves, curls, and added volume can soften sharper features.
I usually like to match my wigs to my natural hair color, but experimenting with different shades can be a lot of fun too.

Choosing the right wig can feel a little overwhelming at first, but it’s also one the quickest and easiest way to rapidly change your look and feel more feminine & beautiful! You’ll be amazed at how much confidence the right style can give you, especially if you're looking to blend in to the crowd. I'm going to challenge you to consider not only what style of hair you want to wear, but where you want to wear it. If it's for yourself at home, then get the wig that matches your fantasy: hello, platinum blonde! If it's about blending in, or looking "like a woman", then there's a bit more to consider. Here's some thoughts to think about!
Start by gathering inspiration — Google and Pinterest are your best friends here. Try searching for hairstyles by length, age, and year (for example, “medium hairstyles for women 50+ 2025”) to get a feel for what’s current and flattering. Look at women around your own age, too! If everyone your age is rocking chic bobs or shoulder-length cuts, you might not want to go straight for waist-length Cher hair (unless standing out is exactly what you want!) A quick way to narrow things down is to figure out your face shape:
If your jawline is the widest part, you probably have a square or heart-shaped face. Soft layers and side parts work beautifully.
If your face is longer than it is wide, look for volume at the sides to balance things out
Once you know your face shape, think about practical details. If you don’t like bangs, go for a lace front wig — it gives you a natural-looking hairline. If you want to be able to style your wig with a curling iron or straightener, look for heat-safe designs.
Pro tip? Don't place your wig too far forward. Lots of girls try doing this to hide what they believe is a more masculine brow, but this just highlights the fact that you're wearing a wig. Your wig should always sit where your hairline starts (roughly halfway between the top of your head and your eyebrows).
Choose a color close to your natural hair for an easy transition. If you’re going much lighter than your natural hair, pick a rooted color (where the roots are darker) to match to your own hair. It'll look more natural, but it'll also help blend in the color your eyebrows!
And finally, consider where you’ll be wearing your wig. Is it for everyday wear, or a special night out? Will longer hair get in the way, or are you aiming for something that makes a statement? For example, blunt bang pageboy wigs like Starlet are bold looks that are more commonly found on fashionistas & fetish models, so opting for something with layers like Mackenzie or Peace might help you blend in to the crowd if you're only wanting to go to the mall or grab a coffee.
Choosing your wig is a balance between practicality and self-expression. Use these tips as a guide, but trust your instincts above all else — when you find the one that feels “right,” you’ll know it instantly. The perfect wig should make you feel comfortable, confident, and completely yourself.
Choosing the right wig isn’t just about finding a style — it’s about finding yourself in the mirror. The shape, color, and texture that make you smile are the ones that suit you best. Whether you go for something soft and natural or bold and transformative, remember that confidence is the most beautiful thing you can wear.
That’s the heart of The Powder Room — helping you discover what makes you feel effortlessly, authentically you.
