Every girl’s journey into femininity begins somewhere — and for many of us, that first spark of curiosity starts with breast forms. Whether you’ve admired them from afar or finally decided it’s time to explore your own curves, stepping into this world can feel both exciting and overwhelming. That’s why The Powder Room exists: to offer warm, lived-in guidance from girls who’ve been exactly where you are now.
Today’s question is one so many beginners whisper with a mix of eagerness and uncertainty — and trust us, you’re in very good company:
“Hi… I have no idea what I’m doing. I am looking at breast forms and don’t know where to start… what kind should I get? Do I wear a bra? Please help!”

Hi! That's ok! Take a seat, grab a drink, we are here to help! Breasts are one of the (dare I say) biggest parts of womanhood, and its very easy to feel overwhelmed with the sheer volume of products, types, and designs available. The BF store has lots of great guides and quizzes, taking into account your body shape, budget, what you are after in a form, etc, so defo have a look at those. You will also probably want to wear a bra, or a basque/ undergarment, unless you want everything on display, which is fine if you are just dressing in private. Most of the time, breast forms need support like normal breasts do, unless you go down the self adhering/ glue route. The best place to start is figuring out your bra size, so looking at your chest, taking your band size, and figuring out how busty you want to be. A good rule of thumb to appear proportionate is take your hip size, and you want your hip and bust to be the same. So if your hip circumference is 38 inches, and your chest is 34, you should consider adding 4 inches of breast. Also look at yourself as this is all for you. Do you have a lady you want to look like? Family or celebrity you want to emulate? Are you wanting to wear outfits that show some cleavage? Would you want to wear these forms all day? Or just for a few hours? I wish you loads of joy in your journey, its exciting to be taking these first steps (in heels of course 😉) ❤.

I have a feeling this is an issue we've all felt in the beginning of our journey, and unfortunately there's no one-size-fits-all answer. Each has their own pros and cons, and a lot of it depends on your personal style, your comfort level, and what you're trying to accomplish.
For example, if you like to wear a lot of low-cut tops, you may want to look at a breastplate. They're one solid piece that goes over your shoulders and torso, so people won't be able to tell that your boobs are fake. And because they're held in place by your shoulders, you don't have to wear a bra with them (unless you want to). The downside is that you'll definitely want to put them on before you do your hair and makeup, and you can get pretty hot and sweaty underneath.
If you're looking for more comfort, breast forms may be the way to go. Forms use adhesive to attach directly to your chest. In many cases, they're self-adhesive, although it's not perfect - the adhesive is generally designed to keep them in place with the help of a bra. You can go braless with forms, but you'll usually need to buy a separate, stronger adhesive. The hardest part of forms is making sure that whatever top you're wearing fully covers your cleavage, unless you don't mind people seeing the seam of where the forms meet your chest. Well, that and making sure that you've put them on evenly so you don't look lopsided!
Then there's picking the size, the color, and in some cases the nipples! But that's all based on personal preference. In general, determining how you want to wear them and what you'll wear them with will be a big step in helping you pick the best option for you. Good luck!

I remember this feeling! it wasnt very long ago. THere are so many ways to go depending on what is important to you and what you plan on wearing! Do you want shape? bounce? cleavage? How do you feel about big chunky neckwear? What is your budget? I have worn everything from dirt cheap foam inserts, gelly "chicken cutlets", fair quality silicone breast forms with pocket bras, the HERA as well as the Athena breast plate and even one similar to the Gold seal Naked... My personal preferance is the Hera, but I have also really made due with a triagular breast form without adhesive. For me my goal was social transition with lots of face to face interactions in full daylight. I found breastplates in the summer months to be impossibly hot and sweaty (including an unfortunate incident odd "boob sweat" that was WAY to low... for me, I wanted my neck clear, and just wear clothes that aren't super cleavage heavy, or if I did, I would strategically pull my pectoral muscles and flesh inward, then wear the form with a push up bra.
I do have some wicked "cleavage" photos that were taken just at home or for a club setting where the seams didnt matter as much (I am SUPER picky about seams and breastforms). for those, no question its the Athena. You can wear backless dresses, or middiff bearing very easy AND there isn't an ugly seam at the neck, nor are you forced to wear a silicone turtle neck. For the Athena, with careful gluing, and placement you can make the seams nearly invisible as the silicone is tapered at the edges and you don't need to be a professional makeup artist to blend it. If you want cleavage and can save up, I cannot recommend the Athena enough it is absolutely STUNNING.
As for bra's, that is up to you! with most forms you will need a bra to support it, though some high end forms will have adhesives to go "bra-less". I recommend it while you are getting started for sure! Remember the band is your actual rib size, and then the cup is the size of the breast.
But at the end of the day, you need to be true to what YOU want and where your budget lies... Sometimes its about biding your time and saving up too and making due in the meantime. but I guess you get what you pay for! If you want examples, go look at my Instagram, I have over 300 posts, wearing some sort of padding or shaping in each

Choosing the right breast forms really starts with you — what you want, how you want to feel, and where you want to wear them!
First, think about the experience you want.
Do you picture showing some skin or having lots of cleavage? Something you can sleep in? Maybe you just want your clothes to fit better, or you want breast forms that make intimate moments more exciting. Or maybe you want something that feels as close to natural breast tissue as possible. Knowing the look and purpose helps narrow things down fast.
Next, take your measurements.
Bra size is critical. A 34D on a footballer looks like mosquito bites, and a 46DD on a petite girl swallows her up! Take your underbust and overbust measurements and talk to a certified breast form fitter. A good fitter can walk you through different options — breastplates vs. individual forms, attachable vs. self-adhering, skin-tone options, weight differences, and more. And they can help you find something that fits your budget without sacrificing too much quality.
Think about the look you want, too! Do you want a subtle, proportionate look — or a super busty fantasy? Either way is valid. Once you know the vibe you’re going for, it becomes much easier to choose between traditional silicone breast forms, breastplates, foam forms, or silicone “real look” versions.
And yes — bras and breast forms absolutely go hand in hand.
A properly fitted bra is the difference between breast forms that look seamlessly part of your body and breast forms that look… a little uncanny. The right bra gives support, shape, and realism.
One final word of advice: if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.Super cheap products tend to be poorly sized, badly shaped, or made from materials that don’t feel good or last very long. Taking a bit of time to research your options (or talking with a fitter) will save you money and the heartache of forms that don’t work for you.
You don’t have to know everything right away — you’re already asking the right questions. And I promise, once you figure out what you want your breast forms to do for you, the rest becomes much easier!
Stepping into the world of breast forms can feel like a big, sparkly leap — but it’s also one of the most joyful parts of exploring your femininity. There’s no “right” way to begin, no perfect formula you must follow, and certainly no expiration date on discovering the curves that make you feel most like you. All that matters is choosing forms that align with your comfort, your vision, and the woman you’re becoming.
Take your time, trust your instincts, and let yourself enjoy this moment. Whether you start with something subtle or go full-on bouncy and busty, you deserve to feel beautiful, supported, and excited every step of the way.
The Powder Room will be taking a short holiday break, but we’ll be back in the new year with even more wisdom, warmth, and girl-to-girl guidance.
