Crossdressing 101: How to Care for a Wig

The Breast Form Store |

Keeping your wig in good shape is essential — not just for your look, but for how you feel. A well-maintained wig can boost your confidence and help you express your true self, every day. Whether your wig is made from human hair or synthetic fibers, caring for it properly will keep it beautiful and wearable.

Understanding Different Types of Wigs

Different wigs need different care, so it’s important to know what yours is made of. The type of wig determines how you clean it, style it, and how long it will last.

Human Hair Wigs

Human hair wigs look and feel the most natural. You can style them like your own hair using heat tools and styling products — just be mindful. Gentle shampoos and conditioners are best, and minimizing heat will help extend your wig’s life.

Synthetic Wigs

Synthetic wigs are budget-friendly and come in endless styles and colors. They hold their shape after washing, which makes care a bit simpler — but they can tangle easily and don’t respond well to heat. Use wig-safe products and avoid heat styling tools.

Mixed and Heat-Friendly Synthetic Wigs

These wigs offer the best of both worlds: a more natural look with lower maintenance. Many can handle some heat, but always follow the manufacturer's instructions to prevent damage.

Essential Tools for Wig Care

Having the right tools makes wig maintenance easier and more effective. A few thoughtful items will help you keep your wig soft, sleek, and gorgeous.

Specialized Wig Brushes and Combs

Having the right tools is everything. Wig brushes and combs are specially made to glide through fibers without pulling on the wefts, minimizing shedding and breakage. Wig brushes typically have soft, widely spaced bristles, while wide-tooth combs are perfect for gently working through tangles.

Wig Shampoos and Conditioners

Ordinary shampoos can strip color and moisture. Wig-specific shampoos are gentle and nourishing, while conditioners help soften the fibers and reduce tangles.

Never use regular, store-bought shampoos or conditioners on synthetic wigs. Those products are meant to penetrate hair follicles, and synthetic fibers don’t have follicles. They either sit on the plastic and get sticky and gross or damage the fibers themselves. Always use products specifically designed for synthetic wigs.

Wig Stands and Storage

Proper storage helps preserve your wig’s shape and keeps it fresh. It's also great for helping you style your wig before you wear it! While wig stands help maintain shape during short periods, never dry your wig on a stand — it can stretch or warp the cap and change how your wig fits. Instead, lay your freshly washed wig flat on a towel to air dry.

Daily Wig Care Routine

Taking a few moments each day can make your wig last longer and keep it looking flawless.

Detangling the Right Way

Never start brushing from the top of your wig — that’s a fast track to pulling fibers out. Always begin at the ends and work your way up, gently loosening knots. For long wigs, section the hair and detangle piece by piece.

Removing Oils and Makeup

Makeup and skin oils can build up around the hairline. Use a cotton pad with a gentle wig cleanser to wipe these areas carefully. Regular cleaning keeps your wig fresh and helps prevent long-term damage.

Refreshing Between Washes

You don’t need to wash your wig daily. Between washes, spritz it with a wig refresher spray or apply dry shampoo to absorb oils and odor. Comb through gently to bring back volume and softness.

Washing and Conditioning

Proper washing keeps your wig clean and silky without wearing it down.

How Often Should You Wash Your Wig?

Human hair wigs usually need washing after 7–10 wears. Synthetic wigs can go 15–20 wears, unless you’re using styling products. Always check the care label — some synthetics aren’t designed to be washed.

Washing Step-by-Step

  • Gently detangle with a wide-tooth comb.
  • Fill a sink with cold water and a capful of wig shampoo.
  • Submerge the wig and gently swish — don’t rub or twist.
  • Rinse with cold water.
  • Apply conditioner to the ends, leave for a few minutes, then rinse.

Drying Tips After rinsing, lay your wig flat on a towel to air dry. Avoid patting or blotting aggressively, which can tangle or damage fibers. Let it dry completely before brushing or styling. Never dry on a wig stand — it can cause the wig to conform to the stand’s shape, ruining the fit. Want a more in depth explanation? Check out this article
